PVC projects to the rescue! Have a water fight!

PVC water cannons made with Instructables

PVC has always been fun for my boys and I to play with, and it came in really handy this last week of August in Maine, where the temperatures and humidity climbed quickly and we needed to find refuge from the heat. I remembered some Instructables I had seen, and together with a hack saw, miter box, rotary tool, some PVC, cement, and a few O-rings, dad and sons constructed a few water cannons to cool off with. Past PVC projects for this dad and sons have included a playhouse frame and some other structures. We also have a huge top-secret project going that I will most certainly blog about, but will not be finished until next summer. We’d also like to build a PVC trebuchet and a wicked PVC rocket launcher. Working with PVC is easy. It’s sturdy but fairly soft. If you don’t have PVC shears or some… read more

Geocaching With Your Kids – Have An Outdoor Adventure

Geocaching ammo box cache

Geocaching Let’s face it. Most stay at home parents are always looking for fun things to do with their kids. It’s really easy to get stuck in a rut and do the same activity again and again because it’s easy or inexpensive. My current rut is taking my littlest guy to The Maine Jump, one of those indoor spaces with lots of bounce houses, slides, and climbing walls. It is cheap (or was – they just raised their prices) and good for him to bounce for hours and socialize with other kids. The only problem is that now it’s BORING. I think it’s time to revert to an old hobby of mine that can be made new again: geocaching. Geocaching is not new. It’s been around for a while, and although the word “geocaching” is a general term for the sport, Geocaching.com, the official site, is trademarked by Groundspeak, Inc…. read more

I Just Want To Have A Good Day

SAHD Life Just Want To Have A Good Day

It’s really easy to figure out what you want from life sometimes. I’ve written before about my struggles with the terrible threes. Lately it is simple. I just want to have a good day. I want to have a day where I’m not saying “no” all the time. A day where my boy is not upset or frustrated and can’t tell my why. It’s not that we don’t have good days. Today I just really needed one. I figured that it was time to step it up a notch and do more with him. I was thumbing through my wife’s book of learning activities (she authored it) and concentrated on the “backyard science” and nature journaling activities. While they are a little complex for a three year old, I thought that I could modify some for a fun outing to a favorite local park that happens to have a system… read more

PVC Projects – A Series of Tubes

PVC pipes and pipe fittings made into a fence

PVC Projects I was perusing the learning store section of Barnes & Noble one day and ran across the coolest toy. There were several different sets of multi-configurable playhouse frames with covers to fit them. Holy cow, my smallest kid would love these. Then I remembered the enclosure I built last summer to keep the bikes out of the rain. There is a much cheaper, bigger, and cooler way to do this: PVC! And who loves playing with PVC and tools more than dads? The only things that could make it more manly would be meat and fire. Just kidding. Kind of. I’ve stumbled across several nice sites offering plans for hundreds of different projects, most of which can be made with just PVC, and others with minimal extra parts. That bike enclosure was made of a bunch of straight PVC pieces cut with a hacksaw, some joints and elbows,… read more
